Ed Kashi, Sheree Procunier, 48, is examined by Pat Burks. Sheree suffers from many serious chronic ailments, including congestive heart failure, a brain tumor, arythmia and heart disease. She was taking 22 different medications, but TennCare has limited her only 5 which has created a series of health crises. Her boyfriend, Dickie Smith, 51, has emphysema, heart disease and a bad liver. He was on 17 medications and has been completely dropped by TennCare. They have come to the North Terrace Medical Clinic for free medications and checkups by nurse Pat Burks. The North Terrace Medical Clinic is in rural Tennessee and serves mainly indigent, uninsured people. It was opened in 1993 by nurse practictioner Pat Burks. Many of the patients at the clinic are those who have been dropped by TennCare. TennCare is Tennessees expanded Medicaid program which has recently suffered dramatic cuts. Over 190,000 people are without coverage. The TennCare cuts are resulting in deaths and extreme suffering and it has become a major strain on emergency rooms and community clinics. |
Ed Kashi, Dr. Ana Blohm is part of the Mount Sinai Visiting Doctors Program in Manhattan, which serves over 1000 patients who have difficulty leaving their homes. A model program that bucks the current trends in health care, Blohm and her colleagues provide hands-on, high-quality medical care to men and women in their own homes. The patients include frail older adults, people with dementia, psychiatric illness, neuromuscular disease, cancer or diabetes, and those who are terminally ill. They range in age from their 20s to 105, and they might not be able to live at home independently without the Visiting Doctors program. Dr. Blohm visits a 79 year old Hispanic patient who is near death. This was her first visit to this patient so she first spends time getting acquainted with the medications she needs. |
Ed Kashi, In the pharmacy of the Hackensack University Medical Center, pharmacy technician Gloria Hernandez loads medications for Robbie the robot to sort for distribution to patients in the hospital. This medical center in Hackensack, New Jersey is on the cutting edge evolution of the digital hospital. The robot that is used to dispense meds was named Robbie through a contest held amongst staff of the hospitals pharmacy. |
